A bead is a small, decorative object that is usually pierced for threading or stringing. There are beads that range in size from under one millimeter to over one centimeter in diameter. A pair of beads that were made from Nassarius sea snail shells, approximately 100,000 years old, are believed to be the earliest known examples of jewelry. The art or craft of creating things with beads is known as beadwork. Beads can be woven together with specialized thread, strung onto thread or soft, flexible wire, or adhered to a surface such as fabric or clay.
There is an endless variety of beads available for sale today. Craft stores sell every type of bead you can imagine in every size and shape possible. Beads that are made of wood, metal, gemstones, and glass are easily available to transform into beautiful pieces of jewelry. Wooden beads may be plain, patterned, or textured. Many wooden beads are round or oval, but square and other shapes of wooden beads are also available. Their sizes range from tiny spacer beads to big round or oval beads the size of a plum.
